the blue room
a space to talk and think
We all have times in our lives when we struggle. What can be most useful at these times is a supportive, non-judgemental place to talk and think.
I am a registered psychotherapist, with a therapy room ('the blue room') in the Uplands area of Swansea. I originally trained as a doctor and psychiatrist and have worked in NHS mental health services for over 20 years.
My personal life experiences, coupled with my professional experiences, have taught me that we often need more than a diagnosis and medication to truly heal and recover. We also need time and support to learn a way to to manage the memories and feelings that cause us distress.
Once we have achieved some stability we can then look to the future with more hope and confidence.
As we become aware of ourselves as story tellers, we realise we can use our stories to heal and make ourselves whole

Making peace with yourself and looking to the future
I practice a type of therapy called systemic psychotherapy, where the primary focus is on relationships. It also recognises that life's problems do not just arise within an individual, but are often the result of pressures, injustices and traumatic events in a person's family, community and wider society, both currently and in the past.
Therefore this type of therapy can be conducted with individuals, couples or families.
I take the approach that a person's 'problem' can arise as a result of the system they are living in rather than being a deficit in themselves.
This re-positioning can often be enough for clients to start having different types of conversations with each other, to truly be in dialogue with the people close to them.
